Silk care

Caring for mulberry silk

Twenty-two momme silk is heavy enough to last years if it is washed the way silk likes. Cool water, a silk detergent, no wringing, and out of the sun to dry.

Washing

Hand washing is kindest. A delicate machine cycle in a mesh bag is fine for a weekly wash.

  1. Cool water, 30 degrees or less.
  2. A silk or wool detergent, pH neutral. Ordinary detergents and anything with enzymes, bleach or brighteners dull the fibre.
  3. Turn the pillowcase inside out. Zip closed. Mesh bag in the machine.
  4. No fabric softener. Silk is already soft; softener coats it.

Drying

Never wring. Press the water out between two towels, then hang or lay flat in the shade. Sun fades the dye and weakens the fibre. Skip the dryer.

Ironing and storing

Iron on the lowest setting while still slightly damp, inside out, no steam. Most creases fall out on the pillow by morning anyway. Store folded in a drawer away from light; not in plastic, which traps moisture.

Eye masks

Hand wash the mask in cool water with the same detergent, press dry, and reshape while damp. The strap is elastic; do not iron it.

Why the weight matters

Momme is silk weight per yard. Nineteen is the common pillowcase weight; ours is 22, which is denser, smoother and slower to show wear. The silk is OEKO-TEX Made in Green and covered by a GOTS Supplier Scope Certificate; the numbers are on every silk product page.
