What Is Earthing? The Science of Grounding Explained

Earthing (grounding) is the practice of connecting your body to the Earth's natural electric charge. Learn the science, the research, and how to start.

The Simple Explanation

Earthing- also called grounding - is the act of making direct physical contact with the Earth's surface. Bare feet on grass, sand, or soil. Or, when that's not practical, using conductive products that replicate the same electrical connection indoors.

It sounds almost too simple to matter. But a growing body of peer-reviewed research suggests that this connection has measurable effects on inflammation, sleep, cortisol, and the autonomic nervous system.

The Earth's Electric Field

The Earth's surface carries a mild, continuous negative electric charge - maintained by lightning strikes, solar radiation, and the planet's own electromagnetic activity. This charge has been present throughout all of human evolution. For most of history, humans were in near-constant contact with it: barefoot, sleeping on the ground, working the soil.

What people usually notice in the first month on a grounding sheet, week by week, and why you get 90 days rather than 14.

Modern life has broken that connection almost entirely. Rubber-soled shoes, elevated beds, synthetic flooring, and urban environments mean most people go days, weeks, or months without any direct Earth contact.

What Happens When You Ground?

When your bare skin touches the Earth's surface, free electrons - negatively charged particles - flow from the ground into your body. These electrons are thought to act as natural antioxidants, neutralising positively charged free radicals that drive oxidative stress and inflammation.

Peer-reviewed studies have documented the following effects from regular earthing:

  • Reduced markers of systemic inflammation
  • Normalised diurnal cortisol rhythm (the hormone that governs your sleep-wake cycle)
  • Improved sleep quality and duration
  • Reduced pain and muscle soreness
  • Shift toward parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) nervous system dominance
  • Improved blood viscosity and circulation

Key Research

Chevalier et al. (2012) - A review of earthing research published in the Journal of Environmental and Public Health concluded that grounding the human body to the Earth produces measurable changes in physiology and health, including reduced inflammation, improved sleep, and accelerated wound healing.

Ghaly & Teplitz (2004) - A controlled study found that sleeping grounded normalised cortisol secretion patterns and reduced sleep disturbance, pain, and stress in participants with chronic complaints.

Oschman et al. (2015) - Published in the Journal of Inflammation Research, this paper proposed that earthing reduces inflammation by allowing electrons to neutralise free radicals at sites of injury or chronic inflammation.

How to Ground When You Can't Go Outside

Spending 20-30 minutes barefoot on natural ground each day is the most accessible form of earthing. But for overnight grounding - where the cumulative benefits are greatest - conductive products are the practical solution.

  • Grounding sheets - woven with silver thread, connected to your outlet's earth port, providing full-body grounding while you sleep
  • Grounding wristbands - worn on the wrist during sleep or rest, ideal for those new to grounding or wanting a lower-cost entry point
  • Grounding sleep bundles - a complete setup combining a grounding sheet with silk sleep accessories

Is It Safe?

Yes. Grounding cords connect only to the earth pin of your outlet - the safety ground, not the live or neutral pins. No electrical current flows through the cord or sheet. The connection is purely for electron transfer, not power. Grounding products are used safely by hundreds of thousands of people worldwide.

The Bottom Line

Earthing is not a new-age concept - it's a return to a connection humans have always had with the planet, backed by an emerging body of scientific research. Whether you start with a barefoot walk or a grounding sheet, the evidence suggests your body is designed to be connected to the Earth.
